Between the months of January and February, the faithful gather at Hindu temple in Malaysia to celebrate the Hindu festival of Thaipusam. During the feast days, devotees shave their heads and perform a pilgrimage along a set route while engaging in various acts of devotion. In its simplest form it means carrying a pot of milk, to the mortification of the flesh, with penetration of the skin, tongue or cheeks with skewers.
